A stolen bakkie was discovered aboard a truck, hidden under stacks of traditional brooms, at the Lembombo port of entry, attempting to enter Mozambique, Mpumalanga police say.
The car was discovered Saturday afternoon by border police, spokesman Colonel Donald Mdhluli said.
“According to reports, the border police were busy with their duties when they noticed a suspicious white truck … with a Mozambican license plate fully loaded with traditional brooms.
“The members were concerned and convinced that there might be something sinister on the truck. The driver was not available and the members obtained information that he had gone to the SARS offices to complete certain documents required when crossing the border with goods.
The members then went to look for him at the SARS offices, but could not find him and began searching the truck. While they were pulling out the traditional brooms, (the police) discovered a white Ford Ranger with a false license plate. Upon further investigation, the police discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen from a garage in Sandton, Gauteng, on November 30, 2020. “
Mdhluli said a search for the suspect had begun.
The car was discovered when a tracking company activated the vehicle’s tracker in its system and picked up a signal that led it to its location.
Since then, a video of the car’s discovery has gone viral on various social media platforms.
