A hearse carrying a body on Saturday caught fire in Paarl East, Western Cape.

Drakenstein Township Fire Services were alerted to the vehicle around 8:14 a.m. on Broadway Street in Paarl East.

“When the fire fighting vehicle and firefighters arrived at the scene, they discovered that the hearse, with the body of a deceased person in a coffin inside, was on fire,” municipality spokeswoman Riana Geldenhuys said in a statement.

The fire was extinguished shortly after their arrival at the scene.

“The hearse suffered significant damage, while the person’s body was also burned.”

Geldenhuys said no injuries were reported and that the cause of the fire would be subject to a police investigation.
