Unions have criticized officials for not prioritizing workers’ livelihoods as they work to implement their rescue plan.

JOHANNESBURG / CAPE TOWN – As South African Airways (SAA) workers continue to protest the company’s non-payment of wages, Cabinet said it appreciates the progress made by the national airline’s business rescue professionals (BRP) .

Unions have criticized officials for not prioritizing workers’ livelihoods as they work to implement their rescue plan.

The matter was part of the topics discussed by the Cabinet at its meeting this week.

The cabinet said it has directed the Department of Public Enterprises to finalize the appointment of an interim board for SAA.

They also want the department to finalize the appointment of a strategic capital partner for the restructuring of the airline.

There is still a lot in the air for SAA as it faces an uncertain future.

The cabinet has implored the public companies department to urgently implement key initiatives for the emergence of a new restructured, efficient and technologically savvy national airline.

But it did not address the salary dilemma, leaving it in the hands of the Public Enterprises Department, which asked for patience in a statement released on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is planning a legal challenge to the Treasury’s decision to finance the SAA’s business rescue plan before Parliament approves the medium-term budget.

The official opposition has also criticized the Treasury for cutting basic services to find the R10.5 billion needed to execute the plan.

MPs debated and ultimately approved the MTBPS which will see a series of tight budgets.

Parliament has heard that the government made an initial payment of 1.5 billion rand to SAA on Thursday.

But that happened before the budget became law.

DA finance spokesman Geordin Hill-Lewis said this showed a lack of respect for Parliament and a disregard for the law.

“This shows a great disrespect for Parliament and a disregard for the law. It is quite possible that it is illegal, and the district attorney has received legal advice at this time on whether it can be stopped. Every member of the ANC, every person in this House should be outraged by the lack of respect shown to Parliament. “

In response to the debate, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni attacked opposition parties whom he accused of scoring political points.

He said the country remained fully behind the African National Congress: “The recent by-elections have shown that the majority of South Africans have full confidence in the African National Congress and this can be verified by the by-elections that we won and the African National El Congress is ready, capable and willing to lead this country.

The MTBPS has now been approved in the National Assembly and will go to the NCOP for concurrence.
