It is a job with high risks and the fear of never seeing your loved ones again.
Chester “Gummy” Malow, a member of the iziCash crew, told TimesLIVE that driving a cash van is “extremely scary.”
“You risk your life every day. You, as a driver, are the first to be injured and shot and most of the time drivers are the first to be killed. We have families and children and we have responsibilities.
“They sacrifice a lot for me to be here today. For them, knowing that we are on the road doing this kind of work, all they can do is pray, ”Malow said.
Malow said the guards work long hours with minimal time with the family.
“We work from 14 to 16 hours a day. I go out in the morning and they (the children) are asleep when I get home at night they are sleeping, ”he said.
On Thursday afternoon, iziCash Solutions, a cash management and logistics company, announced a partnership with Fleetcam, which offers live vehicle camera systems.
According to Grant Clark of the CIT Association of SA (CITASA), there were 260 cash transit incidents in 2020, compared to 244 in 2019.
Clark said 19 crew members were killed.
“It is extremely worrying, because a lost life is one more life. These members have families and are the breadwinners of their families. There are tough times in South Africa with unemployment and these guys go out every day and risk their lives, ”Clark said.
According to iziCash CEO Albert Erasmus, Fleetcam equipped its fleet of vehicles with smart guard surveillance and tracking systems to prevent or mitigate most cash crime attacks.
Erasmus said its vehicles now have 360-degree views and control rooms where live images are monitored.
“Our control rooms track and monitor in real time the entire fleet of CIT armored vehicles, all movement and activity within the vehicles and each step taken by our security personnel in the execution of their duties.
“We can monitor our vehicles wherever they drive. All that audio and footage is incredibly valuable from a criminal investigation point of view. “
Erasmus said the evidence helps police and prosecutors investigate robberies.
Erasmus said it had integrated the Transtrack software system into its entire cash logistics process to ensure that its customers’ cash is tracked “every step of the way.”
“We have to do everything possible to stop these violent attacks in one of the sectors in which some of our most vulnerable fellow citizens make a living,” he said.
Fleetcam CEO Mark Rousseau said: “It is unfortunate that our cash transportation industry has had to suffer so many losses, both in terms of assets and insurance costs, to recoup customer losses. We are proud to partner with iziCash, a company that is forward-thinking in its approach to ensuring absolute precision when it comes to customer security. “
