Kaizer Chiefs have announced that their next Caf Champions League match against PWD Bamenda could be postponed.
The Soweto giants will host the Cameroonian club in the preliminary round second leg at the 2010 FIFA World Cup final venue, FNB Stadium on Friday.
Bamenda are trailing 1-0 on aggregate after losing at home in the first leg that took place at Cameroon’s Limbe Omnisport Stadium on Sunday.
Chiefs issued the following statement on Thursday afternoon stating that Bamenda has written to the Confederation of African Football (Caf) and has asked that his match be postponed.
“The Cameroonian team PWD Bamenda has requested through Caf a postponement of our preliminary match of the second stage of the CL of Caf scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, December 4”, to club statement read.
“Story in development. There will be more updates.”
This comes after reports emerged indicating that Bamenda had not yet reached South Africa.
Mlungisi Ncame, South African Football Association (Safa) competition official and general manager, explained that the Chiefs will handle media inquiries about the possible postponement of the game.
“It’s the Chiefs’ home game and it’s the Chiefs who should take care of everyone [media] inquiries about that Bamenda request, ”Ncame said when speaking with Sowetan.
Then Amakhosi Communications Manager Vina Maphosa revealed that they are willing to move the match to Saturday.
“The bosses can only play the game on Saturday, December 5,” Maphosa said in the same post.
The Soweto giants are now waiting for Caf to respond to their request as they look to advance to the next round of this season’s Champions League.
Gavin Hunt’s team will advance to the first round if it avoids a loss to Abakwa Boys in the second leg.
The overall winner between the two teams will face CD Primeiro de Agosto from Angola in the first round.
