JOHANNESBURG – The extradition of self-proclaimed prophet Shepard Bushiri and his wife, Mary, is one step closer.
Malawi confirmed on Friday afternoon the receipt of the official request to extradite the couple to face trial in South Africa.

The couple left the country after their release on bail of 200,000 rand each in November, but claimed that they fled for security reasons.
The Bushiris face charges of fraud, theft and money laundering in the amount of more than 100 million rand. The prophet also faces three additional charges of rape.
The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, confirmed that the request was granted in terms of the Extradition Protocol of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The minister said in a statement that Malawi had confirmed receipt of the request and that they were confident that the Malawian authorities would respect this process.
“Given our strong and healthy diplomatic, strategic and political relationship, and our common citizenship of the SADC community, we are convinced that the Republic of Malawi will honor the letter and spirit of every provision of its international and regional obligations,” he said. Lamola.

The Bushiris surrendered to the Malawi authorities after Interpol issued a notice. Due to the couple eloping, their opulent R5.5 million mansion in Centurion was seized by the state.
