Former Eskom executive Matshela Koko has accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of being behind his departure from the power company in 2018, in what he described as interference in power company affairs.

Koko testified before the commission of inquiry about the state capture on Thursday night. He relayed how he was politely informed by former Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises Ben Martins of a move by Ramaphosa to have him removed.

Ramaphosa was the vice president of the country at the time and a former president of Optimum Coal, a company that was involved in a payments dispute with Eskom. Since August 2018, the investigation, chaired by Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo, has been hearing evidence of alleged corruption and fraud at state-owned companies, with a key focus on Transnet, SAA and Eskom.

“Part of what he has been focusing on is interference and regulation … a vice president interfered in Eskom’s affairs,” Koko said in her opening statement to the commission.
