Apple’s iPhone 12 will be available for purchase in South Africa on December 18, 2020, with pre-orders opening a week early. After multiple delays and confusion around the official South African launch date, both Vodacom and iStore recently confirmed the news, with the latter offering local pricing options.
The latest range of 5G-enabled smartphones includes Apple’s entry-level offering, the iPhone 12 mini, and extends to the higher-end iPhone 12 Pro Max, all with different storage space options and all with the chip. Ultra fast A14 Bionic that claims to be 50% faster than any other on the market.
Starting with the iPhone 12 mini, the 64GB option will sell for R15,999, the 128GB class for R17,499, and the 265GB phone for R19,999. Apple’s smallest offering weighs just 135 grams and has a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display.
The iPhone 12 starts at R18,999 with 64GB of storage, R19,999 for 128GB, and R22,499 for 265GB. This model is 21% heavier than the mini and has a 6.1-inch screen. It shares the camera’s specs with its younger brother, in particular a 12MP Dual rear system that enables 4k video.
The iPhone 12 Pro range starts at 128GB, which retails for R23,499. The 265GB option costs R25,999 and 512GB of storage will cost customers R30,499. The iPhone 12 Pro features a three-lens camera system that works well in low-light conditions.

Two variants, the Samsung Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra, were launched in South Africa in August 2020. The 4G-enabled Note20 entered the market at R20,999. Since then, however, prices have gradually come down, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 256GB Dual Sim can be bought for around R18,000.
In terms of comparative pricing along the storage capacity lines, this beats Apple’s entry-level 265GB iPhone mini. But both brands compete well in the mid-tier price range. Samsung’s 5G-enabled Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 256GB Dual Sim can be purchased for around R26,000 from retailers, which is in a similar range as the iPhone 12 Pro.
Importantly, both the Galaxy Note 20 and the Ultra cost more when purchased directly from Samsung. However, buying directly from Samsung allows buyers the option to exchange their older smartphone models, which will lower the price of the new purchase.
Apple also offers this trade-in option, and iPhone users can save up to R12,000 (calculated for the iPhone X Max 64GB) when looking to buy from the iPhone12 range.
In terms of technical comparison between the iPhone 12 and the Galaxy Note20, while Apple’s A14 processor is faster, Samsung’s Exynos 990 CPU takes full advantage of the available 8GB of RAM, making it fast enough to complete. most of the tasks.
The Note20 rivals the screen size of the iPhone, with 6.7-inch and 6.9-inch displays. The Samsung also has an S Pen, which is used to design, write, and export as PPT or Word files.
