An empty Newlands hosts the first T20 between the Proteas and England (Rooster)
The first ODI between the Proteas and England, scheduled for Friday at Newlands, was postponed.
The match will now take place on Sunday in Paarl.
In a statement on Friday, Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that the decision had been made after “Results of a Proteas team player who tested positive for COVID-19 after the teams’ last scheduled round of testing, held on the Thursday before ODIs.”
“In the interest of the safety and well-being of both teams, the match officials and everyone involved in the match, CSA Acting Director General Kugandrie Govender as well as ECB Director General Tom Harrison agreed to postpone the first party to Sunday “ the statement concluded.
This is the third time a Proteas player has tested positive for coronavirus since the team was announced ahead of the recently completed T20 series against England.
One player had tested positive before the Proteas entered his biobubble at the Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town, while a second had tested positive inside the biobubble and was later removed.
England, for its part, has not returned any positive cases since they are in the country.
As a result of the postponement, the rest of the tour itinerary has now been modified.
The modified tour dates are as follows:
Sunday December 6 – 1st ODI, Boland Park, Paarl (Day Match)
Monday, December 7 – 2nd ODI, Newlands, Cape Town (Match day-night)
Wednesday, December 9, 2020 – 3rd ODI, Newlands, Cape Town (Day-Night Match)
