Cape Town – Police are searching for three taxi drivers who allegedly attacked a mother and son on the N2 just past Bhunga Avenue during rush hour Wednesday morning.
The three taxi drivers who allegedly tried to force their way in front of Wafeeq Craven’s vehicle were filmed hitting it.
Video of the attack recorded by a passenger in one of the minibus taxis showed Craven and a woman said to be his mother surrounded by three men, one of whom is holding a knife.
Craven’s niece, Badia Slandin, said Craven was on his way to work when a minibus taxi stopped him and damaged his vehicle.
He tried to warn the taxi driver, but instead the driver and two other taxi drivers blocked him.
Slandin said, according to Craven, the drivers allegedly threw an object at his vehicle and began attacking him as he exited.
“They beat and kicked him and one of the taxi drivers took out a knife and stabbed him in the cheek,” Slandin said.
She said this happened while her mother was trying to stop the attack, and she was pushed around and suffered bruises on her arms and face.
Craven’s mother declined to speak and said the incident had traumatized her.
Slandin said his nephew was recovering at home.
“We want justice. This could have been anyone’s son,” he said.
Police spokesman FC van Wyk said police were investigating an assault case after a man was attacked by taxi drivers. No arrests have yet been made.
The provincial spokesman for the South African National Taxi Council, Gershon Geyer, said the council was strongly against this kind of behavior in the taxi industry.
“We condemn what happened and Santaco will do everything in his power to address the violence in the industry and change the behavior of our members,” Geyer said. Safety and security Mayco member JP Smith said the situation had escalated unnecessarily and was simply perpetuating the culture of violence that was endemic in the country.
Smith encouraged the whistleblower to file an accusation with police to have the matter investigated and those responsible brought to a search, saying the City will work closely with law enforcement to ensure that, when necessary, an arrest is made. .
“Our phantom squad has so far played a critical role in tracking the details of the offender’s vehicle.
“We have also contracted with the provincial regulatory authority that is responsible for issuing operating permits to investigate the matter,” Smith said.
