Durban – An elderly grandmother and her grandchildren were evacuated from their apartment on Wiest Road after the roof of their apartment caught fire on Friday morning.
It is believed that embers from the fire at the Engen refinery fell on the roof.
Community activist and head of the South Durban Community Environment Alliance Desmond Dsa said he went to the place where the family was evacuated.
KwaZulu-Natal EMS spokesman Robert Mckenzie said emergency services handled the flat fire and the fire was extinguished.
He said no injuries were reported.
Mckenzie said the fire at the refinery took place around 7 a.m.
He said the cause was unknown and that teams were investigating.
“No one was injured as a result of the explosion. However, six people were treated for smoke inhalation. All emergency services are currently at the scene,” he said.
Meanwhile, ALS paramedic Garrith Jamieson dismissed claims that people had died in the fire.
In a voice memo, one person claims there were deaths and families were called to identify the bodies.
Workers at the scene said they felt a massive shock when the explosion occurred.
Other residents in various parts of the city said their windows were vibrating. Some as far as Pinetown said they felt the explosion.
