The Kaizer Chiefs are still sweating from defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele’s fitness ahead of the CAF Champions League preliminary round second leg against PWD Bamenda at FNB Stadium (6pm).
Mphahlele limped off in the first leg against the Cameroonian team on Sunday, to be replaced by Yagan Sasman, and the club has reported that the prognosis for his hamstring strain is still unknown.
With Amakhosi entering the second leg with a 1-0 lead, the veteran defender may have to secure the Chiefs’ passage to the next phase of Africa’s premier club competition. But coach Gavin Hunt will be reluctant to risk Mphahlele with the resumption of the local PSL program next week, with the Chiefs facing two tough games in a span of four days.
Last weekend, the Chiefs ended their winless streak by defeating champions Cameroon in a game Bamenda hosted in the coastal city of Limbe.
Bafana goalkeeper Bafana Itumeleng Khune saved a penalty in the closing minutes of the game to help the Chiefs score a rare victory. The team returned to training yesterday, after Hunt gave the players a day off to recover from the long trip to Cameroon on Tuesday.
If the Chiefs beat Bamenda in the preliminary round of the Champions League, they will face August 1 of Angola in the first round.
Amakhosi will return to PSL action on Tuesday when they host Black Leopards at FNB Stadium.
