JOHANNESBURG – With the holiday season upon us, Cash in Transit (CIT) companies are gearing up as they continue to be targets of crime.
The South African Cash in Transit Association (Citasa), CIT company iziCash and surveillance company FleetCam launched new surveillance technology for cash vans on Thursday.
Despite the COVID-19 lockdown, there have been 260 incidents of cash-in-transit robberies in the country this year, which is 16 more than last year. Nineteen members of the cash transit staff died this year.
And with about 3,000 cash vans commuting across the country daily, there could be a serious spike in CIT crimes in December.
IziCash launched the newest FleetCam technology just in time for this year’s holidays. Approximately seven cameras are installed on each truck, providing images of the interior and exterior of the truck in real time.
“This is a new technology and we can retrieve live information offline in the system. We don’t need to unload it from the vehicle, ”said Albert Erusmus, CEO of iziCash.
Erusmus said they were ready for the holiday season.
“All the staff went through a retraining program and reactivation exercises. Ensuring that their alertness increases, we have appointed additional personnel and tactical support, ”he said.
