These are some of the safest budget cars to drive in South Africa

Global NCAP and the Automobile Association (AA) South Africa have released the latest round of crash test results for some of South Africa’s most popular cars.

The Safer Cars for Africa campaign was launched by Global NCAP in 2017 with the goal of promoting safer vehicles across the African continent.

To date, a total of 15 cars from a range of makes have been tested, with a focus on budget and best-selling models. Testing generally focuses on the cheapest variants of each vehicle, where some do not have airbags.

The three models tested in the last round include:

  • The Steed 5 picks up at Great Wall;
  • The Haval H1 five-door SUV;
  • Renault’s Kwid five-door compact.

The Global NCAP said the three cars tested gave serious cause for concern about low levels of protection for adults and children.

Alarmingly, the results show that the zero-rated Great Wall Steed 5 demonstrated a high probability of life-threatening injuries.

“Another zero-star rated bakkie gives us very serious cause for concern in the results of our latest crash tests for Africa,” said Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP.

“The potential for life-threatening injuries in the Steed 5 follows the zero-star performance of the Nissan Hardbody pickup. The contrast between the marketing claims of these vehicles and the reality of their poor safety performance could not be more stark. “

Below is the full list of tests from the last three years and the performance of each car. The cars are ordered from lowest to highest security (total stars).
