The Department of Transportation has once again extended the deadline for renewal of the driving license, declared Minister Fikile Mbalula in the new regulations published today.

The Disaster Management Law has been amended to facilitate the extension of the validity period of driver’s licenses until August 31, 2021.

The licenses whose validity will be extended until this date include the following:

  • Apprentice licenses
  • Driver’s license cards
  • Temporary driving licenses
  • Professional driving licenses

Any of the above that expired after March 26, 2020 are still considered valid.

“All learners licenses, driver’s license cards, temporary driver’s licenses, and professional driving permits that expire during the period starting from March 26, 2020 to and including December 31, 2020 are considered valid and their periods of validity are extended for an additional grace period until August 31, 2021 ”, says the document.

This amendment is effective immediately.

Great delay

The extension of the term for the renewal of these licenses follows huge accumulation of 320,000 driver’s licenses was discovered last month.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said at the time that this was growing by 90,000 every month.

He said the delay was caused by corrupt staff at driver’s license testing centers, while Gauteng’s MEC for public transport and road infrastructure, Jacob Mamabolo, said government officials were the cause of the problem. .

While not directly mentioning corruption, Mamabolo hinted that something “dubious” was happening at the driver’s license testing centers.

Mbalula echoed Mamabolo’s concerns and said that “everything is corruption, it is a problem that is happening behind the scenes,” he said.
