One killed when truck loses control and collides with cars on N3

Durban: One person died in a terrible accident on the N3 where a truck lost control and collided with five vehicles and three trucks on Thursday.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, the company, along with various emergency responders, responded to a collision on the N3 East bound for just before Marianhill Toll Plaza in the west region of Durban just after 10am.

“Reports from the scene indicate that a truck driver lost control on the slope, crashing into several cars in the process, before the truck rolled down an embankment.

“Upon arrival, medics discovered that several people had sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe with the occupants of the vehicles still trapped.

He said one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Unfortunately, an elderly woman has been declared deceased after an advanced life support resuscitation.”

Herbst said all of the injured patients were treated at the scene and taken to hospital for further treatment.

He said the truck driver suffered minor injuries.

Police spokesman Col. Thembeka Mbele confirmed that Hillcrest SAPS has opened a wrongful death case for investigation.

“It is alleged that at 10:20 am today, a truck carrying cobblestones lost control and crashed into five vehicles and three trucks on the N3 highway towards Mariannhill Toll Plaza,” he said.
