JOHANNESBURG – As the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng’s legislature hails Prime Minister David Makhura’s cabinet reshuffle as a step in the right direction, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has sounded the warning bells on its new MEC .

Makhura has appointed Nomathemba Mokgethi as MEC of Health and is transferring Morakane Mosupyoe from the Department of Economic Development to the Department of Social Development.

He also appointed Vice Minister of Cooperative Governance Parks Tau as the province’s new MEC of Economic Development, which caught the ire of the district attorney, who said that Tau was involved in corruption linked to Regiment Capital.

Makhura appointed a new Health MEC following his firing from Bandile Masuku in October over the personal protective equipment tender scandal.

The ANC caucus in the legislature has welcomed all of Makhura’s appointments.

Furthermore, he praised Tau’s reappointment and said the province would greatly benefit from joining Makhura’s cabinet.

The ANC caucus also hopes this will bring stability to the ailing department.

Meanwhile, the district attorney in Gauteng has vowed to keep an eye on Tau with his provincial leader Solly Msimanga saying that Tau had a cloud over his head since his tenure as MMC in the city of Johannesburg.

“Parks Tau’s wife, Philiswa Twala Tau, received a stake in a blank bank economic empowerment deal from Capitec in 2006 worth around R10 million led by Regiments Capital.”

Msimanga said the district attorney would seek to ensure that Tau runs his department in a transparent manner.
