Cape Town – The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) announced on Wednesday that its temporary disability and care dependency benefits had been extended until December 31.
In a statement, Sassa said the extension was for grants that expired on February 1 of this year.
He said the dependency allowance for children who turned 18 during this period has also been expanded.
“The minister of social development made the decision to extend them until December 31, 2020, in response to the declared state of disaster that made it difficult for beneficiaries to apply for social grants, especially those that require medical evaluations due to limited access to health . installations.
“These two grants will finally expire on December 31, 2020,” said Sassa.
Individuals serving as temporary disability grant recipients are encouraged to visit the nearest Sassa local offices beginning January 5, 2021 to reapply if they feel their medical condition will still prevent them from working.
Child caregivers are also encouraged to visit local offices to reapply for disability grants for young adults.
Recipients should know that this is a new application, as temporary grants are only awarded for a specific period of time.
Sassa said that for both grants, recipients must bring all medical and clinical records related to the medical condition for which the applicant is applying.
He said that all Covid-19 precautionary measures are in place and that he will endeavor to limit the time applicants must spend in queues as much as possible.
Sassa said that letters have also been published informing recipients that their grants will expire and that those affected by this need should respond to the letters received as soon as possible.
Caregivers who reapply for dependency grants are not required to bring children to Sassa offices..
