The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government (KZN) has banned large gatherings during the December period.

This occurred on the same day that Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced that the daily increase in Covid-19 cases exceeded 4,000.

“As of today, the cumulative total of COVID-19 cases is 796,472 with 4,173 new cases identified since the last report,” Mkhize said Wednesday night in his latest update on the Coronavirus pandemic.

Speculation was mounting on Wednesday about what measures the government will implement to manage the growing Covid-19 numbers.

While Gauteng Prime Minister David Makhura said the country’s economic center does not need higher levels of lockdown or restrictions, analysts anticipate that the Western and Eastern Cape could see so-called “firewall” lockdowns aimed at bringing the pandemic to manageable levels before the holiday. season. .

Following a meeting of the KZN provincial executive, the province issued a statement on Wednesday saying: “The Executive Council, with the advice of doctors and scientists, resolved not to encourage the holding of major events in the province due to the threat and the risks posed by the COVID-19 Pandemic. “

He went on to say that visitors to the province are still welcome, but should be limited to small gatherings and activities that do not compromise national disaster management regulations.

“KZN is approaching the cliff of the second wave Covid-19, according to the latest figures,” they said.
