The district attorney will not participate in Thursday’s vote of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Party chief Natasha Mazzone confirmed Wednesday that none of the party members would be part of the parliamentary proceedings.
The vote was sanctioned by spokesperson Thandi Modise, at the request of the African Transformation Movement (ATM).
Since then, the party has failed to get Modise to grant its wishes that the vote take place on a secret ballot.
The ATM believes that Ramaphosa has failed in his duties as president. This is the president’s first vote of no confidence since he took office in 2019.
Mazzone said the district attorney does not believe the call for a vote is genuine. He said it is only likely to fail because ATM has only two MPs in Parliament and would need a large number of MPs from the ANC to support the motion.
“The motion, therefore, will not succeed and will only provide an entertainment break from the work of Parliament.
“The district attorney’s decision to abstain from the vote does not mean that we will not hold the president accountable. By abstaining, we are warning President Ramaphosa, because if he does not implement his economic reform strategy, as he promised, certainly in the future, we will reconsider our decision to abstain from such a motion, “he said.
“This motion should serve as a wake-up call for the President to show some backbone by presenting his Economic Recovery and Reconstruction Plan to Parliament for approval and implementation without delay,” Mazzone said.
