CAPE TOWN – The Democratic Alliance (DA) will abstain from Thursday’s motion of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa, the party confirmed.

The district attorney says he believes the motion is frivolous.

The motion, the first that Ramaphosa has faced since he took power, has been filed by the African Transformation Movement (ATM).

The ATM has only two MPs in the 400-member National Assembly, and would need the support of opposition parties as well as MPs from the African National Congress (ANC) to garner the necessary support of 50% plus one vote for a vote of no confidence. happen.

The chief prosecutor, Natasha Mazzone, said the party would vote neither for nor against tomorrow’s vote of no confidence against Ramaphosa. But Mazzone said the decision to abstain from voting did not mean that the district attorney would not continue to hold Ramaphosa accountable.

“We believe it is a frivolous motion, the motion will not succeed and will only provide an entertainment break from the actual work of Parliament.”

Mazzone said the motion should not have been made in the first place.

“The ATM is nothing more than a side project of the Zuma-Magashule faction of the ANC and they are using the Parliament floor to develop an internal ANC battle between factions.”

The ATM, on the other hand, believes their motives are genuine. Spokeswoman Sibusiso Mncwabe said the party was taking legal action to force President Thandi Modise to allow a secret ballot, a request she has so far rejected twice.
