Sale of alcoholic beverages, restricted parties in Nelson Mandela Bay

The strictest Covid-19 regulations are set to curb the festivities in Nelson Mandela Bay this holiday season.

The sale of liquor will once again be restricted to four days a week, according to three high-ranking experts who attended a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa and the National Coronavirus Command Council on Wednesday morning.

It is unclear when the new restrictions will take effect.

Some of the other recommendations that are being discussed with the cabinet include restricting gatherings, with funerals and religious services being limited to 100 people.

It is understood that the municipality is seeking to close open public spaces, which may include beaches.

The decision on public spaces will be discussed at a Bay command council meeting scheduled for noon Wednesday.

“Taberns volunteered to take the take out route and to be honest, no one will be happy with these decisions,” said a source.

“Closing beaches is not a foregone conclusion, there are more parks and braai areas where people like to have fun.”

Another source confirmed that alcohol sales were expected to be restricted from Monday to Thursday.

Acting Mayor Thsonono Buyeye is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. Wednesday to give an update on Covid-19.

This is a developing story.
