The Schumacher name will make a return from racing to Formula 1 in 2021, after Haas signed Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, to a multi-year contract, according to F1.com

Mick currently leads the Formula 2 championship by 14 points and could clinch the title in the last two races of the season.

Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner says: “I am very pleased to be able to confirm Mick Schumacher in our driver lineup for next season and I look forward to welcoming him to the team.

“The Formula 2 Championship has long served as a testing ground for talent to display their credentials and this year’s field has been without a doubt one of the most competitive in recent seasons. Mick has won races, accumulated podiums and has stood out against some pretty exceptional talents in 2020.

“I firmly believe that he has earned the opportunity to graduate from Formula 1 based on his performances. We have an opportunity ahead as a team to evaluate and nurture a new driver given our familiarity with our racing package heading into 2021 “.

“We are putting our building blocks in place for the continued long-term growth of the team and I look forward to Mick’s contributions both on and off the track in that process.”

Mick will join fellow F2 driver Nikita Mazepin at Team Haas. This means that the American team will have two completely new drivers on the team, as the youngsters will replace Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen at the end of the 2020 season.

Earlier on Wednesday (December 2) it was also announced that the Williams driver George Russell to replace Lewis Hamilton at this weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix, as the seven-time world champion is in self-isolation due to testing positive for Covid-19.
