Several senior police officers and administrative personnel have been fired after their alleged involvement in corrupt activities.

According to the spokesman for the national police, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, the seven members include two senior managers at the brigadier level, two colonels, a lieutenant colonel and two civilian employees.

The seven members were among 16 people initially detained on June 4 during a pre-dawn operation. They were arrested by an Anti-Corruption Task Force created in 2017 by the commissioner of the national police, General Khehla John Sitole.

Among the 16 detainees were a former lieutenant general, three brigade members, colonels, civil servants and six private citizens. They were arrested on multiple charges, which included fraud, corruption, theft, and money laundering.

Although all of the defendants in this matter are currently undergoing criminal prosecution, the seven policemen attended internal disciplinary hearings, were found guilty and subsequently fired, Naidoo said.
