Lionel Messi’s emotional tribute to Diego Maradona in Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Osasuna will reportedly cost the club up to € 3,000 (£ 2,698).
After scoring an excellent goal in which he beat two defenders and shot the ball past goalkeeper Sergio Herrera, Messi took off his Barcelona jersey to reveal a Newell’s Old Boys jersey with Maradona’s iconic number 10 on the back.
Maradona had a brief stint at Newell’s towards the end of his playing career, while Messi spent six years there as a youngster before joining Barcelona’s famous La Masia youth academy.
Messi has previously spoken about his memories of watching Maradona play for Newell’s, telling TyC Sports in 2013 that he was in the stadium for Maradona’s 1993 debut.

“I don’t remember much, I was very young, but I saw Maradona on the pitch the day he made his debut against Emelec,” Messi said.
Maradona scored his only goal for Newell’s that day and Messi mimicked his celebration after scoring against Osasuna, then posted a side-by-side image on Instagram of him and Maradona.
It was an emotional tribute from the 33-year-old, but the referee admonished him for removing his shirt.
According to a report by the Spanish media Sport, Barcelona must be fined up to € 3,000 in accordance with article 91 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code.
The article says: “The footballer who, on the occasion of having scored a goal or for any reason derived from the vicissitudes of the game, lifts his shirt and displays any type of advertising, slogan, legend, acronym, anagrams or drawings, whatever be its content or the purpose of the action, will be sanctioned, as the author of a serious offense, with a fine of up to € 3,000 and a warning “.
The report adds that the club will have to pay the fine to the RFEF at the end of the season.
Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman called Messi’s tribute “a great moment in every way” after the game, saying: “It was a great moment. First, because of the goal that Leo scored and then because of the gesture. that he had for the death of Diego Maradona.
