CAPE TOWN – On Monday, the body of a lifeguard washed ashore after disappearing into the waves at Muizenberg.
The 23-year-old seasonal lifeguard was knocked off a rescue sled as he and a colleague responded to kitesurfers in distress on Saturday.
Police spokesman Frederick van Wyk said a widespread search was launched.
The lifeguard is believed to have been knocked off a rescue sled towed by a jet ski, about 50 to 100 meters from shore, when he and his colleague responded to a call from a kitesurfer in distress off St. James yesterday for the afternoon. LP pic.twitter.com/Ol4mAUfBCT

However, he said the body made it to shore later.
“Yesterday [Monday] In the afternoon, around 5 pm, members of the law enforcement agencies informed members of the dive unit about the body, which was washed up between Sunrise Circle and Mnandi Beach. The body was on dry land and there was no need for divers to attend the scene, “said Van Wyk.
