JOHANNESBURG – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to remove Minister Pravin Gordhan from his cabinet after admitting that he motivated the establishment of an investigative unit of the South African Revenue Service (Sars).

During his testimony at the state capture commission on Monday, Gordhan acknowledged that a unit was established to investigate illegal cigarette smuggling and illicit trade, but maintained that all was right.

The Red Berets want the immediate dismissal of the Minister of Public Enterprises, accusing him of espionage and of turning Sars into a spy unit.

EFF’s Vuyani Pambo said Gordhan’s actions represented a violation of the country’s democracy.
