The Uruguayan forward was instrumental in his team’s 3-2 victory on Sunday, but the former Red Devils midfielder had a complaint about him.

Edinson Cavani may have been Manchester United’s hero against Southampton on Sunday, but Roy Keane was stumped by the forward’s delay in preparing for a 3-2 victory.

The 33-year-old forward was called up to replace Mason Greenwood at halftime with the Red Devils trailing 2-0 at St Mary’s. He then orchestrated a tremendous comeback for the visitors, first priming Bruno Fernandes to rebound a goal before shooting two of his own that sealed all three points in injury time.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised the Uruguayan international for his “great impact” on the game, while his teammate Harry Maguire says he is the best forward he has faced in training, but while Cavani receives praise, former midfielder Keane was unimpressed by his tardiness.

Although Solskjaer made the change during halftime, the former Paris Saint-Germain star did not re-enter until a minute after the match resumed because he had to change boots.

“He was slow to get on the field, in those boots,” Keane said in Sky sports . “He scored just as well because the guy is not ready and ready to go is amazing. Obviously he didn’t need the boots at the end, he scored with two headers.

“He had a great contribution when he arrived, with that quality, hunger and desire.”

Former United captain Keane says the attacker has shown he still has the quality to impress in the Premier League, having scored three goals in five substitute appearances.

“It was always a gamble when he came to the club,” he added. “People doubted why he was coming to the club, were he hungry and eager?

“We’ve seen videos of him in some other games and we thought, ‘Does he still have it?’ But we’ve seen proof of it today, he could become a great signing for United. It worked well today.”

United’s next game is against Cavani’s former team, who will face PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday.
