Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi blamed organizations and individuals who called for the school year to be canceled.
JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Department of Education said Sunday that at least 53,000 students had not returned to school since the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.
Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi blamed organizations and individuals who called for the school year to be canceled.
“These are the people who took the department to court, these are the people who said the academic year should not continue. We believe that 53,000 students listened to these reckless leaders, some of them have failed as priests and politicians and felt they can use the educational space to boost their image and these are the people who should be held accountable.
Lesufi said officials would determine why these students did not return to school.
“As a department, we feel that we cannot just accept that they will not return, we are going to track them down and talk to them so that the schools can also help us identify where these students reside and hopefully persuade them to come in early 2021. But, the reality is that if they were not in class, they have to repeat their grades ”.
