JOHANNESBURG – Lawyer Dali Mpofu is speaking with Public Enterprise Minister Pravin Gordhan about his exchange of remarks about the meeting with the Guptas.
Mpofu represents former South African Tax Service (Sars) Commissioner Tom Moyane, who was granted permission to cross-examine Gordhan.
He asked Gordhan if he agreed that meeting the Guptas was one of the hallmarks of state capture in South Africa and Gordhan said the circumstances must be taken into account.
Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo is mediating a confrontation between Mpofu and Gordhan.
Gordhan: “I revealed it to you. If I had wanted to hide it, I could have hidden it, but I have voluntarily revealed it.”
Mpofu: You see President, I ask you to monitor this witness because if he is going to give unnecessary verbiage in addition to the answer, then I will be forced to interrupt him. “

The fight between Mpofu and Gordhan continues and this time it is about Gordan’s exchange of statements about the encounter with the Guptas.
Mpofu: “When you made your first statement to the commission, you still forgot to meet the Guptas, right?”
To which Gordhan replied, “I’ll check it out during lunchtime and come back.”
Mpofu: “But when you made your second statement, were you reminded of what you said?”
Gordhan: “Like I say, I’ll check it out during lunchtime.”
But Gordhan wasn’t taking the blows lying down.
“I don’t think Mr. Mpofu is helping this particular set of exchanges with disposable comments like that.”
Gordhan maintains that Moyane wanted him to resign so he could move forward with the capture of the state.
