Al Ahly football director adds further intrigue to speculation about Mamelodi Sundowns forward Sirino

The Uruguayan admitted this week that he would like to link up with his former coach Pitso Mosimane, who has since won the Caf Champions League again.

Al Ahly football director Sayed Abdel-Hafiz commented on the talk linking Mamelodi Sundowns striker Gaston Sirino with the newly crowned Caf Champions League champions.

Since Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane left for Al Ahly in October, the conversation about a possible Sirino move has grown louder. Even before Mosimane’s move, there were rumors that the Red Devils were tracking the 29-year-old.

This culminated earlier in the week when the Uruguayan-born player himself admitted that he wanted to re-team with Mosimane. The head coach has already brought Kabelo Rangoaga (physical trainer) and Musi Matlaba (performance analyst) with him from Sundowns, as well as former Premier Soccer League coach Cavin Johnson.

The Pretoria club then responded, showing their disappointment at Sirino’s comments in the media. It was also mentioned that Sirino signed a new five-year contract last July.

Now Al Ahly, through his football director, Abdel-Hafiz, has commented on this.

Abdel-Hafiz was a bit vague with his comments, but noted that Egyptians are interested in the Sundowns star.

“I don’t have the final details on the negotiations with Sirino,” he said, quoted by Kingfut, the Egyptian publication.

“The file is currently in the hands of the Head of Transfers, Amir Tawfik.

“It is possible to delay negotiations with him for one more period, this is very possible, and it is also possible that we will not sign him at all,” added the football director.

Sirino’s contribution has been considerable at Sundowns: in three seasons he played 100 games, scored 24 goals and created 29 assists for the Tshwane giants.

However, they have not played since the first game of the season, a 1-0 loss to Bloemfontein Celtic in MTN8 competition, due to injury.

In his absence, new signings Kermit Erasmus and Peter Shalulile have stood out, as has Themba Zwane. Tshwane’s club topped the league standings with a resounding 3-0 win over Stellenbosch FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday night.

South Africa’s transfer window closes on Monday, November 30, but in Egypt it closes six days later.
