The experienced central defender praised the Buccaneers’ fighting spirit after they drew Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele.

Orlando Pirates vice captain Thulani Hatshwayo has supported his teammate Richard Ofori, who made a goal error in their clash against Baroka FC on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers had to fight to keep Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele in a 1-1 draw in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) game at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Baroka broke the deadlock after Ofori landed a corner kick in the way of Ananias Gebhardt and the Namibian left-back scored with a half volley to give the visitors the lead.

“I think as a team we did well to counterattack after conceding on our own mistake,” Hlatshwayo said at the Twitter account.

“We kept going. We knew they were going to sit down because we had a lot of ball possession in the first half.

“We knew we had to get a goal to be able to push for another.”

The Pirates managed to snatch a tying goal through Tshegofatso Mabasa, who came off the bench to score on one bunt after being set up by his second-half substitute teammate Deon Hotto.

Hlatshwayo, who captained the team in Happy Jele’s absence, praised the fighting spirit of the team that saw the Soweto giants score in injury time.

“It happens. The error occurred. We also lost possession [in midfield] and collide with the post. It’s a game of mistakes, “he continued.

“There was a fighting spirit on the part of the guys as they were able to come back and save a point.

“It could have been worse. We conceded a goal at a critical stage when we came back from halftime. Our minds were still a bit heavy. That’s why we made that mistake.”

International Bafana Bafana also indicated that Ofori should not be blamed for making the mistake that led to the opening goal.

“We cannot blame anyone. But we will learn from mistakes,” added the former Bidvest Wits captain.

“We had to go back. We had to pressure the guys to come back. Obviously, it’s disappointing that we didn’t get all three points at home.”

“But we managed to save a point despite the situation we are in. We can build from here.”

The pirates will face Cape Town in their next match, which is a league game on December 5 in Mother City.
