A man died after falling overboard from a fishing boat in Cape Town’s Table Bay harbor.
The National Maritime Rescue Institute (NSRI) received a report that a 59-year-old man was in the water at 9:42 p.m. Saturday. The local man appears to have fallen overboard from a fishing boat at the moorings at Duncan Dock in Table Bay Harbor, explained NSRI Table Bay service helmsman Quentin Botha.
NSRI teams and emergency response personnel responded to the alert and, upon arrival, searched the area for the man, who had reportedly disappeared underwater.
“A fishing buddy was on the scene assisting in a search. NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed to the water to conduct a freediving search. Police divers dived where the man had last been seen. and during a dive they searched the man’s body was recovered underwater by police divers, “said Botha.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was transported to the Table Bay Harbor Police Station, where authorities took him into their care. An investigation file has been opened.
In a separate incident on Saturday, a seasonal lifeguard went missing in the waves near St James, also in Cape Town, while responding to a kitesurfer in distress.
The lifeguard fell from a rescue sled towed by a jet ski just before 3 p.m., said Zahid Badroodien, a member of City of Cape Town Community Services and Health Mayco.
“The main lifeguard was operating the boat, with the seasonal lifeguard on the rescue sled. It is suspected that the lifeguard was knocked off the sled, approximately 50 to 100 meters from shore, and then disappeared into the water,” Badroodien said .
A search operation that included sweeping patrols and water patrols was immediately launched until the light began to fade.
Muizenberg Beach will be closed for swimming on Sunday to allow the search operation to continue.
