JOHANNESBURG – The Free Andile Lungisa Campaign said Saturday that the convicted Bay Councilor Nelson Mandela would be welcomed by the masses when he returns to society on December 1.
This comes after supporters of the jailed African National Congress councilor claim that he will be paroled next week.
Lungisa is serving a two-year prison sentence at North End Prison in Port Elizabeth for assaulting a Democratic Alliance councilor with a glass jug on his head during a council fight in 2016.
Lungisa chose to remain behind bars to end the prison programs he had started there despite being released on bail following his appeal to the Constitutional Court.
The campaign, which has branded Lungisa a political prisoner, said they had received confirmation directly from him.
Spokesperson Abner Mosaase said: “You have assured me that you have been provided with all the documentation that requires your release on December 1. I have spoken with Mr. Lungisa and he has assured me and I do not doubt it. “
Mosaase claimed that Lungisa’s impending release was part of the government’s COVID-19 parole waiver for low-risk offenders.
“The Department of Correctional Services has issued statements indicating that individuals arrested for non-serious crimes will receive probation pending the conditions of COVOD-19. So Mr. Lungisa is very lucky. “
However, in stark contrast, the Department of Correctional Services has distanced itself from claims that Lungisa will be released early and officials said they had not yet received this information.
