JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Saturday that the country’s land borders were worse than porous.
The party’s shadow Defense Minister, Kobus Marias, and his team have made a monitoring visit to assess conditions at various border posts between South Africa and Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
The DA team began their fact-finding mission at the Beitbridge border post.
This is one of the busiest entry points to South Africa.
With media reports exposing how easy it is to get in and out of South Africa, Marías has raised serious concerns about security risks at the borders.
Marias said the recently erected 37 million rand fence between South Africa and Zimbabwe has collapsed.
He said that with so few soldiers and old equipment, it is impossible to stop illegal immigration that poses a very serious security threat to the integrity of the country.
