KZN Cogta MEC demands investigation after 3 children died due to illegal electricity connection

Three children were killed due to an illegal electricity connection in the informal settlement of Jika Joe in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, said Sipho Hlomuka, MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) on Saturday.

He has called for those responsible for the illegal electrical connections, which killed the three children, to come forward.

“That our province loses three children in this way is heartbreaking and demands a stand against the dangerous illegal electrical connections that continue to spread in our communities. Those who make and benefit from illegal electrical connections must be held accountable,” he said. Hlomuka.

He said he was sad that the incident took place during Activism’s 16-day campaign.

“This tragic incident takes place at a time when we began with the 16 Days of Activism Against the Abuse of Women and Children campaign. This campaign aims to protect the rights of the most vulnerable within our communities.”

Hlomuka called on the Msunduzi municipality to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident “and hold those responsible for the illegal connections to account.

He has also asked Jika Joe residents to submit “any information that can help stop those responsible for the spread of illegal connections.”
