CAPE TOWN – President Cyril Ramaphosa will face the first vote of no confidence in his leadership in Parliament next week.
The motion was tabled by the African Transformation Movement (ATM) earlier this year before the shutdown began.
President Thandi Modise has now agreed that the debate will take place next Thursday, emerged in the National Assembly programming committee on Thursday.
The ATM requested the motion of no confidence based on its belief that President Ramaphosa did not reveal to Parliament that he benefited from the CR17 campaign, which funded his candidacy to become president of the African National Congress (ANC).
The party threatened to go to court if the matter was not debated during this period.
The debate will now continue next Thursday, a day before the National Assembly rises.
The ATM has only two seats in Parliament, and it is unclear how it will muster the necessary two-thirds majority in the House, which is necessary for a vote of no confidence to be successful. But the debate will give Ramaphosa detractors a chance to voice their opinions.
