CAPE TOWN – Former captain Faf du Plessis managed an aggressive half century to lead South Africa’s batting effort in the first Twenty20 international match against England at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday.

Du Plessis made 58 of 40 balls while South Africa made 179 of six after being sent off on a cool night.

Sam Curran was the most successful bowler of the tourists, taking three of 28 in his four overs.

Curran, with his left arm, struck in the first over of the game when Temba Bavuma caught goalie Jos Buttler, attempting a return shot.

That joined Du Plessis and current captain Quinton de Kock in a second 77-of-51-ball window spot before De Kock was caught covering Chris Jordan for 30.

Du Plessis hit 24 runs with a Tom Curran over, the most productive of the innings, including two sixes and two fours.

It was South Africa’s first international match since March, but there were no spectators due to Covid restrictions.
