Cape Town – Some South Africans prepared long lines and crowded spaces in search of Black Friday deals amid a growing number of Covid-19 cases.

The annual event, which usually draws massive crowds in a frenzied shopping experience, left many South Africans taking a safer route to get their deals online.

Toys R Us and Babies R Us South Africa Marketing Manager Catherine Jacoby said Black Friday was a highly anticipated day of the year and a great opportunity for people to save big on their Christmas shopping.

“We have kept the safety of our customers at the forefront of the event and have ensured that all security protocols have been followed, as well as encouraging customers to shop online,” said Jacoby.

Jacoby said the response online was incredible and exceeded his expectations and that more customers took a safer route shopping from the comfort of their home.

“There has still been a lot of turnout at the queuing stores from the early hours of the morning and it has been good to see people following and adhering to Covid-19 security protocols in our stores,” Jacoby said.

Massmart Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs Brian Leroni said Makro and Game have been running an extended Black Friday program that had the advantage of spreading Black Friday shopper traffic over an extended four-week period rather than concentrating it. in four days.

Leroni also said that there has been a noticeable increase in click-and-cash orders.

“We have perfected social distancing protocols over the past few months and are pleased that customers have been able to shop safely in our stores during our extended Black Friday promotion.

“Our line leaders have provided feedback that clients have been patient and voluntarily maintained social distance with little intervention from line leaders,” Leroni said.

Leroni said clients have made good use of their online opportunities and their online systems have performed well without incident.

FNB Card CEO Chris Labuschagne said: “We encourage customers to opt for convenient and safer ways to shop during Black Friday in accordance with Covid-19 security guidelines.

“More importantly, many local retailers have started offering Black Friday specials much earlier than usual to improve the shopping experience for consumers.

“We also encourage customers to use trusted platforms when shopping online and remind everyone to always keep information such as PINs and passwords safe and only authenticate transactions they have initiated.”
