JOHANNESBURG / CAPE TOWN – Health authorities have warned South Africans to be extremely cautious this holiday season and to follow all precautionary measures to prevent a resurgence of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
Many people are expected to go on vacation during the December holidays and travel between provinces is expected to peak.
While some provinces like Gauteng have stable infection rates today, experts warned that a resurgence is highly possible.
Provinces like the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape are already experiencing a spike in infections.
Cape Town’s COVID-19 resurgence is getting worse as cases continue to rise.
On Friday, the Western Cape Health Department revealed that subway cases increased by 73%.
There has also been a 28% increase in deaths.
Cape Town has more than 3,900 active cases and the province with more than 8,400 cases.
Areas of concern in Cape Town include Mitchells Plain, which has seen an increase of 185%, Khayelitsha with 92% and the southern sub-district with 87%.
Over the past seven days, Garden Route has also seen a 117% increase in new COVID-19 cases.
Shimoney Regter from the department said: “Reports show that social gatherings without complying with protective measures have quite a few cases that test positive.”
Prime Minister Alan Winde also met with the cabinet on Friday, where they discussed practical ways in which they can curb and manage the spread of infections.
