JOHANNESBURG – Police Minister Bheki Cele said on Friday that more than 20 people had been arrested in connection with the ongoing attacks against truck drivers in the road freight industry.

The sector has recently been rocked by a series of violent attacks, prompting President Cyril Ramaphosa to create an inter-ministerial committee to investigate the unrest.

Earlier this week, two truckers were detained at gunpoint on the N12 highway before their vehicles caught fire.

That was before a trucker was shot and killed in Alberton.

The tensions between South Africa and the migration drive are believed to be at the center of the dispute.

Cele said 25 people have been arrested in connection with the crimes.

“Some of them, I think five, have received bail. But I’m also happy that there are five people who were arrested in July at KZN who have not received bail, which means that all segments, including prosecutions, were beginning to realize the seriousness of the problem of burning trucks. “
