- Black Friday 2020 won’t save you 75% if you stock up on Christmas alcohol; the discounts are a bit lackluster across the board.
- But there are a couple of places where you can find wine, whiskey, and beer at discounted prices.
- These are our current favorite alcoholic beverage offerings in South Africa.

Like much of Black Friday 2020, alcoholic beverage sales are a bit dire. We found that the Cybercellar website was having problems and mostly unusable in the early afternoon, Takealot’s “deals” weren’t, big discounts were generally sold out by mid-morning, and physical chains didn’t have a great selection as part of their daily specials.
But there are a couple of low prices worth checking out, including spirits, wine, and beer.
Here are our favorite discounted alcohol deals on Black Friday 2020 in South Africa.
R8 for a 340ml bottle of Pick n Pay Castle Lite, if you buy 48 with the correct card
At R219 for 24 340ml bottles, Pick n Pay’s standard Black Friday discount at Castle Lite isn’t much of a standout; You can find that kind of deal elsewhere.
But the “Smart Price” duplicator at that, for Smart Shopper cardholders, is something else: R385 for a set of two. If you’re willing to buy 48 bottles at a time, it costs less than R50 for a six-pack, or a few R8 for beer.
A bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label for less than R300 from Checkers, with your card
Checkers also have bigger discounts on Black Friday deals for their Xtra Savings members, without the need to purchase multiple units. Present that card and it will sell you a 750ml bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label for R299, compared to the stable R360 it is normally sold to.
Just over R60 per bottle for Makro’s Diemersdal sauvignon blanc
You will pay R70 if you buy it from the warehouse, and you can pay closer to R90 in the usual retail channels. But Makro will sell you six bottles of Diemersdal sauvignon blanc for R370, for a bottle of around R62.
That comes with pickup at the store or through Makro’s locker system.
R160 for Ultra Liquors 5 Year KWV Brandy
Ultra Liquors is selling KWV 5YO brandy for just under R160 a bottle, and at roughly the same price per case. That compares to more than R200 you could easily afford and a low daily price of R180 per bottle.
One bottle of Belvedere vodka per R300 from BottleStore
The discount claimed for the standard bottle of Belvedere vodka at the BottleStore, now available at R300 a piece, is actually a bit underrated; you will normally pay about R420 for it. And you can get it with next day shipping.
2 + 1 bottles of Auchentoshan whiskey from BottleShop for R800
You need to like, or be willing to try, two different types of Auchentoshan, but if so, BottleShop’s offer of R800 for three bottles is worth it. You would normally pay R350 a piece for the two 12 year old bottles and another R370 for the “American Oak” variant. You’re not getting the latter for free, but it’s not far off either.
(If you only want the American oak, see Norman Goodfellas’ double pack for R580.)
