Durban – There was no Black Friday shopping frenzy at Gateway Theater of Shopping at 10am.

It seemed like a normal day at the mall, according to Independent Newspaper photographer Zanele Zulu.

“Normally Black Friday is always full and stores are packed, but the decline could be due to Covid-19.

“Today is very calm. The center’s management also said that their Fridays and weekends are busier than this.

“Only a few stores like Zara have people waiting in queues. This is because they only allow a certain number of people inside the store at a time according to Covid-19 regulations. ”

Zulu said there was no queue outside big box stores like Checkers, Spar and Game.

Speaking to a Makro worker at Galleria, who preferred to remain anonymous, there were no queues.

“I think it’s because we’ve been running these specials for a week, so there’s been no rush to get people into the store.”

Another buyer said he was able to quickly get to the stores without any problems.

“I left the house just before 10 am and was in and out in less than an hour. I went to about three stores and got everything I needed. I found parking without a fight and there were no queues, ”said the woman.

He added that he had asked staff at some of the stores why the mall was so quiet.

“Most of the larger retailers have made sales throughout the month of November in anticipation of Black Friday so people can shop as they please. We expect it to be a bit busier in the afternoon, but nothing too hectic, ”said a staff member.
