Given the time South Africans have been spending at home this year, and the amount of Black Friday advertising that has moved online, it is not surprising that many retailers are pushing to advertise their Black Friday tech deals.
If you are looking for deep discounts, you will have to fork out for the high-end items; there’s very little to play for on entry-level models in the tech sphere. Retailers are also diluting their once-in-a-lifetime deals, many offering discounts seen at other times of the year instead.
There are also no prominent competitors for most altruistic retailers this year; most seem to be hedging their bets and being somewhat conservative with their deals. In some cases, the discounted prices even appear standardized among various competitors.
The usual caveats apply, but in slightly higher doses this year – many of the sale items will soon be replaced with newer ranges, and most of the discounts listed are over the top.
Much of the advertising focuses on stores like Incredible Connection, iStore, Hirsch’s, Expert, Makro, and Takealot. And if you’re willing to do a little research on each one, you should be able to save yourself some big savings on some high-priced tech items this Black Friday.
Apple Laptops
13-inch MacBook Air
iStore and Incredible Connection are running the biggest Black Friday deals on Apple laptops. These are understandably not part of the recently announced new range of MacBooks, but if you’re happy with a model that’s at least a year old then you can get a reasonable deal.
This 13-inch MacBook Air from iStore is the cheapest Apple laptop we could find in a Black Friday special. It’s an entry-level when it comes to MacBooks, but it packs impressive battery life, it’s light and thin, and it packs a fifth-gen Intel Core processor. At R14,999, iStore is R2,000 cheaper than the recommended retail price and R1,000 cheaper than Incredible Connection, which offers the same model in its Black Friday deals.
The entry-level MacBook Pro offerings are uninspiring – hovering around the R1,000 off mark and approaching prices seen at other times of the year. However, if you are willing to pay about R50k for a new beast, you will get a better deal.
At R45,999, this 16-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar from Incredible Connection is discounted by R4,000; iStore is selling the same laptop on its Black Friday special for R47,599, and other retailers for R50,499.
The 8-core variation of the above is cheap too: Incredible Connection has it at R54,999 and iStore at R56 999. For comparison, Digicape, which has been limited in its Black Friday deals this year, is selling this laptop. at the normal price of R59,099.
Windows Laptops
HP 14 Core i5
Black Friday deals on Windows laptops are less inspiring, especially at the entry level. But this HP 14 Core i5 laptop ticks most of the boxes and is being offered for a decent discount of R2,000, priced at R11,999, on Incredible Connection.
Mid-range and high-end laptops are where you’ll find the biggest bargains. This HP 15 i7 8GB 1TB laptop retails for R12,999 with a promised discount of R4,000, which according to our research is a fairly accurately stated discount.
And this Dell XPS laptop is advertised at a discounted price of R28,999, a promised discount of R4,000. Although research suggests this discount may be inflated, this is the best deal you’ll get on a high-end Windows laptop.
Televisions
190 cm (75 “) Samsung QLED 4K TV
Televisions are traditionally at the heart of Black Friday deals around the world, but they are also where the biggest overpromised discounts are found in South Africa.
Almost all Black Friday TV deals promise massive discounts that, if you think about it, are less exciting, and a quick look at the top retailers will show just how exaggerated and variable the promised discounts really are. But if you’re desperate to light up your living room with the latest TV, there are some decent deals out there.
Hirsch’s promises that its LG 165cm 4K Smart OLED TV is selling for a staggering discount of R8,500, at a not-yet-small R49,999.99, but a little research online shows that this is a good case of too much retail price. inflated.
If it’s savings you’re after, go for the 190cm Samsung QLED 4K TV. Both Expert and Hirsch are selling it for around R40,000, and while the promised discount on both sites is inflated, it’s still roughly R10,000 less than what you’ll pay elsewhere.
If it’s a slightly less absurd TV you’re after, LG offers some great deals at all the major retailers. The LG 55 “Nano Cell Smart TV from Game, Incredible Connection and Hirsch’s is a pretty good buy at R10,000 – although they all promise to announce different original sale prices, it still represents a R2,000 discount from competitors.
The larger LG 75 ”Smart Nano TV is a step up at R23,000, which, as a great way to demonstrate the tricks that are carried out in this department, depending on who you believe, is a savings of between R4,000. and R7,000.
Usable
Apple Watch Series 3
Smartwatches and wearable devices are starting to get into the Black Friday deals in South Africa, and if you’re looking for a new wrist device, you may be able to get a decent deal.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch has recently sold for up to R5,000, but several retailers including Expert, Takealot, and Hirsch’s, are selling it for R2,900.
iStore and DigitalExperience sell entry-level Apple Watches at a reasonable discount. The silver aluminum case with 42mm GPS is sold in a Black Friday special for R4,799; Digicape is selling the same watch for R5,499.
There are also good deals on higher-spec Apple watches. The 44mm Apple Watch with GPS + Cellular Space Gray Series 5 is sold through the iStore for R8,499, which is roughly R1,500 of the regular price. Though if you’re willing to settle for the silver case, you have a better deal at Incredible Connection, where it sells for R7,999.
