The Department of Higher Education has released the full list of high-demand occupations in South Africa, including a deeper assessment of the positions likely to see a faster and slower recovery from Covid-19.
The list, which is revised every two years, highlights occupations that show relatively strong job growth and / or are experiencing shortages in the labor market, or are expected to be in demand in the future.
“The processes to identify high-demand occupations would be incomplete without taking into account the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic,” the department said.
“As is well known, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the South African economy. In addition to its overall economic impact, the pandemic is likely to fundamentally change the makeup of the South African economy.
This means that strong industries could struggle, while previously weaker industries could prosper, he said.
“Exactly how this will happen is still very uncertain, and there is not enough certainty to eliminate or add occupations based solely on the potential changes that the pandemic could bring about. As a result, the development of the list was based on cases where industry representatives specifically argued in favor of the inclusion or exclusion of an occupation based on Covid-19 considerations ”.
The department has listed as many as 345 occupations, of which 195 stand out as more likely to face slow recovery and lower demand in post-Covid-19 South Africa, and 73 jobs show higher demand and faster recovery.
The department said that while the list shows occupations in demand, it is not intended to point to a shortage and is not intended to be used to inform the recruitment of critically skilled foreign nationals.
