Black Friday has been extended to span several weeks by many of South Africa’s most prominent e-commerce retailers.
However, there will likely still be a noticeable spike in shopping on the actual Black Friday, which will take place on November 27.
Historically, Black Friday has been a difficult day for many ecommerce websites as they have had to take significant steps to ensure their websites remain active after the tremendous increase in traffic.
Some companies have still suffered from problems, which have a major effect on their ability to offer their customers a large number of Black Friday deals.
So we asked major South African retailers what their plans were to ensure their websites stay up and their systems run smoothly on Friday.
Makro and game
Massmart, which owns both Makro and Game, said its retailers have been making investments in its systems ahead of the Black Friday period.
“We continue to invest significantly in our online platforms both in terms of usability and stability, anticipating Black Friday 2020 traffic in the era of COVID-19,” Massmart said.
He said that he has made some major changes to the resources at his disposal to ensure that Black Friday runs smoothly.
“Although we do not anticipate difficulties, we have greatly increased the availability of technical support skills and intensified real-time performance monitoring,” Massmart said.
It’s worth noting that both Makro and Game have been making sales since the beginning of the month, which has helped these retailers stagger demand over a longer period of time.
Pick n Pay
Pick n Pay said it expects a major increase in traffic on Black Friday.
“As we expect increased traffic volumes, we have expanded our system resources for the full Black Friday trading period that launched with our online offerings on November 13,” Pick n Pay said.
The retailer said its online business has seen unprecedented growth this year and it expects its infrastructure to continue to handle the increased traffic effectively.
“During the first weeks of the Stage 5 crash, we logged the highest number of visitors to our website and our systems handled traffic without any problems,” said Pick n Pay.
“We are confident that our infrastructure will continue to operate smoothly and efficiently with the expected traffic volumes over the upcoming Black Friday weekend.”
Pick n Pay launched its Black Friday sale on Monday, November 23, offering up to 50% off hundreds of products for the next two weeks.
These specials include daily deals that run through November 26, Smart Price deals that run through November 29, and Black Friday extended deals that run through December 6.
Pick n Pay is also offering online-only deals starting November 13.
