JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Water and Sanitation said Wednesday that the combined water levels of the Integrated Vaal River System continue to rise as the critical dams feeding the network remain stable.

The department said the system, which consists of 14 rivers in different provinces, increased to 57% this week.

The Vaal Dam has also seen significant improvement after intermittent rains that have fallen on its catchment areas.

The dam, which is critical to Gauteng’s economy, saw an increase for the third week in a row, with water levels now at 36%.

The department’s Sputnik Ratau said: “The Vaal River Integrated System has stabilized in the last week. We can see that individual dams are starting to see an increase. And this is very encouraging for the summer because it implies that if the largest system in the country is able to recover sufficiently, we can have enough water to move into the dry season.

Ratau said that while the system had been able to remain in a stable position, the water levels at the Vaal Dam were at risk of declining unless companies and the public saved water.
