JOHANNESBURG – Lobbyist AfriForum and Solidarity said that if the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, was not legally responsible for his comments against the police, he would believe that he was above the law.
The groups filed a criminal complaint against Malema for comments he made at a rally in the Free State on Sunday.
Malema said that they would treat the police as they did in the 1980s, saying that they would not fight them from the pickets but would fight them in their homes with their families.
This caught the attention of the Popcru police union and Minister Bheki Cele, who said Malema crossed the line with his irresponsible comments.
Afriforum said that more than 1,000 police officers expressed concern over Malema’s statements.
Ernst Roets of the group said: “Julius Malema’s conduct is completely unacceptable. You are acting like you are above the law and if you are not prosecuted it will send you a message that you are above the law which is why it is so important that the matter is properly investigated and prosecuted. for this.”
