CAPE TOWN – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputies accused of showing contempt of Parliament have again failed to appear before a disciplinary hearing.
Parliament’s Powers and Privileges Committee continued Wednesday with the hearings of members who interrupted the 2019 budget voting speech by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan.
The deputies also did not appear before the committee on Tuesday.
Parliament is accusing 16 EFF MPs of contempt for the 2019 incident.
The Secretary of Parliament had written to all the accused members instructing them to appear before the committee.
In the letter, the deputies are charged with conduct that constitutes contempt of Parliament for the 2019 incident and with refusing to obey the rules of the National Assembly when crossing the room during proceedings.

The committee’s chairman, Philly Mapulane, said none of them had provided an explanation for their absence.
“I am inclined to agree with the proposal that we do not inquire about their whereabouts because they were supposed to be here but they are not here and they have offered no explanation as to why they are not here. Therefore, we should not seek that explanation. “
The independently appointed initiator, advocate Ncumisa Mayosi, also said that MPs did not meet deadlines for making written submissions.
“They asked for an extension of time to provide them and we granted them an extension of time to provide them before November 23rd. Those have not been received to date. “
