JOHANNESBURG – The All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa have expressed their anger and frustration saying that foreign nationals should not be hired to drive trucks in the country.

There has been a series of truck violence where at least 29 of them were attacked last week, allegedly in protest at the employment of foreign nationals in the sector.

Forum Secretary Sifiso Nyathi says the freight industry is overlooking skilled South African drivers.

“So truck driving is not a skills shortage – we have thousands of drivers in South Africa who are sitting at home with a driver’s license and PDP and not working or employed.”

Meanwhile, Gauteng Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo has urged drivers to protest within the limits of the law.

“There is no basis in our country or in the law for someone to participate in acts of violence no matter how aggrieved they are.”

Police are searching for gunmen who detained two truckers on the N12 highway Wednesday morning before setting their vehicles on fire.
